URI Narragansett Indian Undergraduate Scholarship

URI is excited to announce the creation of the Narragansett Indian Undergraduate Scholarship for students of Narragansett Indian ancestry who have been accepted to a URI undergraduate program. This scholarship provides full, in-state tuition and fees for up to four years, as well as an additional grant of up to $5,000 based on full-time enrollment. 

Eligibility Criteria

In addition to being accepted into an undergraduate degree program, students must have:

  • A tribal enrollment identification card or an official letter from the tribal administration that confirms membership through a direct family member (parent).
  • An official FAFSA on file and all verification requirements completed.

Catherine T. Murray Scholarship Fund

The Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by Catherine Murray, a long-time educator and also a board member and valued volunteer at the Ocean State Center for Independent Living. It was her wish to support the philosophy and spirit of OSCIL through a scholarship that gives people with disability access to higher education.

Grants of $1000+ are awarded to help students with a disability to continue their education past high school. Scholarship funds can be used for educational expenses such as tuition or the purchase of textbooks. They may also be used to obtain assistive/adaptive equipment or devices that aid the student in meeting their educational goals.

To qualify for this scholarship applicants must:
·   have a significant disability
·   be a Rhode Island resident (Your home address MUST be in RI)
·   plan to attend a college, technical school, or a trade/vocational program in the upcoming academic year

Preference is based on career goals, merit, and economic need.

A scholarship is available to students enrolled at Chariho Regional High School, Narragansett High School, South Kingstown High School, and Westerly High Schools; whom have been accepted to a Marine Science or Fisheries program in an institute of higher learning. Applicants must show self-motivation, good work ethic, and be a good role model for their peers. Preference may be given toward financial need, and to those who have interest in pursuing their careers in the state of Rhode Island.

The amount of the award is $1000.00 to be paid directly to the school or college of the recipient’s choice upon receipt of proof of enrollment.

The Red Sox Foundation’s Service Scholarship is now open and available!!

The Red Sox Foundation’s New England Service Scholarship initiative recognizes graduating high school seniors across New England who are making a meaningful impact through service in their local communities by awarding them a $1,000 college scholarship.

 The Foundation will award a minimum of 100 scholarships in 2023 and honor recipients as part of a pregame ceremony on Monday, August 7th at Fenway Park. Since the creation of this initiative in 2010, the Foundation has recognized over 1,000 students as New England Service Scholars.

 ELIGIBILITY TO APPLY:

·      Must be graduating from a public high school in one of the six New England states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont)

·      Attending a 2- or 4-year institution in the Fall of 2023

·      Demonstrate a strong commitment to making a positive impact in their local communities

·      Demonstrate financial need

The Cooperative Credit Union Association College Scholarship

WCCU is part of the Cooperative Credit Union Association (CCUA) and proud to participate in the annual scholarship program. Three scholarships of $1,500 each are awarded on a statewide basis each year to high school seniors who plan to enroll in undergraduate college/university degree programs. As a sponsoring Credit Union, WCCU will submit its top three entries for consideration.

South County Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship

The South County Hospital Medical Staff Scholarship Fund is used to assist graduating seniors interested in working in the health care field.  These awards shall be made for direct support of course fees/purchase of books/tuition assistance.  Multiple scholarships are awarded on an annual basis. 

This scholarship is intended to assist a graduating high school senior in his or her future endeavors in securing a position in a health care profession.  The final vocational interest could include such diverse areas as medicine, dentistry, nursing or physical therapy.  The initial screening process will be performed by the individual’s school faculty members who are responsible for this type of procedure and should be based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, a 500 word essay, in addition to the individual’s expressed interest in a health profession career.

The Katie DeCubellis Memorial Foundation is a local non-profit organization established in the memory of Katie DeCubellis, a 13-year old Narragansett student killed by a drunk driver on October 29, 1999.  The organization seeks to help others and to make our community a better place in which to live.  Our Foundation has set out to educate people on the dangers of drunk driving and substance abuse.

The KDMF Offers four different scholarships.  The “KDMF Victim Relief”, the “Nobody’s Glory…Everybody’s Gain”, the “Make a Difference” and the “KDMF Memorial” (open to Narragansett residents only).

Sylvia Overend Memorial Scholarship

The Sylvia Overend Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Sylvia Dobson Overend, a Chariho Middle School teacher and middle school Drama Club advisor, who passed away in 2019 from a rare form of Leukemia.


She took great pride in the CMS Drama Club, building it into an organization that grew in numbers every year, with Sylvia directing larger and larger productions. She had a knack for get young actors to come out of their shell, and project confidence in their performances. In addition to her love of the theater, Mrs. Overend had a passion for singing. She was a member of the Christ Church Choir, and a former member of the Chorus of Westerly.

 Two $500 scholarships will be awarded each year- one to a graduating Senior member of the CHS Drama Club, and one to a graduating Senior member of the CHS Chorus, who plan on furthering their education after graduating. Only one application per student (you cannot apply for both). Applications will be due annually on April 17th (Sylvia’s birthday!) and will be presented at the annual Scholarship Awards night.

The Clarence D. Stenhouse Scholarship, established by the Westerly Ambulance Corps, is awarded to a graduating senior who resides in the Westerly, Pawcatuck, or Chariho area.  This scholarship is a tribute to Mr. Stenhouse's dedication, his influence on youth, and his service to the community. 

The recipient must attend or be accepted to an accredited school for Emergency Medical Services, Paramedic School, Nursing program or a related medical field leading to a 2-4 year certificate or degree.

The Maddie Potts Foundation was established in November of 2017, less than 2 months after Maddie's sudden death on the Chariho soccer field of an unknown brain aneurysm. Maddie exemplified all attributes that a student athlete should possess. She always led by example, and dedicated her free time to helping her teammates, fellow art students and all others around her to be the very best they could be. She stood up for and reached out to new students/teammates that were not as likely to be able to stand up for themselves.  The Maddie Potts Foundation was founded in order to carry on Maddie's legacy of kindness, compassion, hard work, inclusive leadership and perseverance, aka Maddie Mentality. 

The Maddie Potts Foundation will present two $1,100.00 scholarships this year. The criteria for these scholarships and application is attached.

The cover sheet must be attached to your application and returned to your school counselor by 2:15pm on May 11th 2023. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted. The RI National Guard Minuteman Scholarship requires membership in the Rhode Island Army National Guard, but can cover full tuition/fees or room and board (10K cap), $1,200 book stipend, $420 monthly ROTC Cadet stipend, $338-$480 per month drill pay, and more. 

Scholarship recipients serve in the Rhode Island Army National Guard while also attending college as an ROTC cadet, upon graduation they are commissioned as Second Lieutenants.
